Mr. Green, The following lines were sent to be inserted in
the American Magazine, some months ago; . . . [16 more lines
of introduction, signed] Philo-Musus.
VERSES OCCASIONED BY MR. COLLY CIBBER'S EPITAPH ON MR. POPE,
in the Gentleman's Magazine for June, 1744.
What rake now doubts he has a soul to save,
When graceless Colly preaches o'er a grave;
Pope's verse he could not damn, in Part or whole;
But, like a hot-brain'd bigot, ___  damns his soul; . . .
[12 lines]
Whilst all the good and just, --an awful throng,
Lament the muse who moraliz'd his song.
